Father, Dad, Daddy, Poppa, Pa, Padre - whatever your child calls you...the call is the same. They called you. They may need help with a problem, they may just want your attention, they may need you to play ball or whatever the reason, it really doesn’t matter. The fact is they need you and they called out to you. Once you experience the first time your child utters the name “dada”, your life is never the same. Twenty-five years ago my life changed with the birth of my first child and it’s never been the same since. Sometime later, God gave me this little reminder of fatherhood:
F = Forgive them; nobody’s perfect, not you, not them. (Matt 6:12 & 15)
A = Allow them; allow your child to be what God planned them to be. (Jer. 1:5)
T = Teach them; teach by example. (Pr. 4:1-15)
H = Hear them; take time to listen to your child. Body language speaks too. (Eph 6:4)
E = Enjoy them; they are a gift from God. (Ps. 127:3-5)
R = Release them; to live life. God is still God and He’ll take care of them. (Pr. 22:6)
Remember Psalms 127 says “...unless the Lord builds the house. They labor in vain...” so this is really an exercise in letting God work through you. Maybe this is what the wise writer is speaking about in Pr. 17:6 when he said, “Children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father.”
